Production with 100% renewable energy
Together with RISE – Research Institutes of Sweden – we have identified the energy mix as the single largest factor in the environmental footprint of ski manufacturing.* Southern Norrland, where our ski factory is located, is dominated by 100% renewable and 100% fossil-free local hydropower.
Our region has the lowest consumption of carbon dioxide per kWh in the world, with a five-year average of 16 g carbon dioxide intensity per kWh (gCO2eq/kWh).** Other European ski-producing countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and the Czech Republic have an average of 352g per kWh, in other words the difference is significant.**
A pair of Extrem skis has a carbon footprint of 28.8 kg CO2, including raw materials, transport, manufacturing and waste management. Only 0.6 kg CO2 comes from our own manufacturing thanks to the exceptionally low carbon intensity of our region.* Building an identical pair of skis in a country with a higher carbon intensity can therefore be up to 400% higher, with a footprint of up to 120 kg CO2 per ski.***

Energy-efficient heating
Our ski factory is powered by 100% renewable and 100% fossil-free, local hydropower. In 2020, we invested in an efficient solution where the excess heat from our two ski presses is recycled through an innovative ventilation system and then used to heat our buildings during working hours. At other times of the day, we use highly efficient geothermal energy. The combination of these two efficient systems has reduced our need for external heat sources by 70%.
Waste disposal
We strive to minimize our material use and to be as efficient as possible in all our activities. All our waste is sorted by type, compressed and then collected and recycled by Lundstams AB, a world-leading company in the industry. The surplus from our wood cores is used in the district heating system in nearby Östersund (or in our own wood stoves at home).
The world's most sustainable ski production
If you look at the big picture, we are convinced that we run the most sustainable ski manufacturing in the world today.
