Our story

1981

Snowboard pioneers

In 1981, Stefan Cederberg and Patrik Söderlund began making a precursor to the modern day snowboards in their parents' garage on Frösön. They had seen a report about American surfers surfing on snow and were inspired to do the same.

They began experimenting with their own creations using different unique methods of making the boards and tested them on the local slope a stone's throw away.

The garage quickly transformed into a workshop where creativity, imagination and ideas flowed. Epoxy was liberally smeared on plywood, steel edges were not even a consideration at this time when the only way to ride the boards was in deep and fluffy snow.

1993

Hobby becomes business

When snowboards became the new hot thing in the early nineties, Stefan and Patrik decided to invest more in their hobby and put all their cards on the table. After several study visits to the major manufacturers in the European Alps, they both noticed that they themselves produced a very similar product - their own design from the garage on Frösön had come a long way.

In 1993, Extrem Snowboards of Scandinavia was founded and the garage was replaced by an 800 square meter factory in Åre. At the same time, new modern machinery was invested in to increase production. Extrem quickly began to grow into one of the largest snowboard brands in Sweden. All boards were tested, developed and manufactured by hand in Åre.

1998

The first skis

In 1998 Extrem started producing skis, which were the first skis manufactured in Sweden in 25 years. The experience from the snowboarding world had a great influence on the new skis.

Compared to other ski manufacturers at the time, Extrem's skis were wide and the graphic language was inspired by snowboards. When freeskiing became the next big thing in the following years, Extrem was right on time.

2011

Åre Ski Factory

After a few years under Norwegian ownership, the founders Stefan and Patrik, together with Carl Geijer, Anders Selvehed and Johan Hjelte, bought back the factory and the Extrem brand.

The company was named Åre Skidfabrik with Extrem as its own brand.

2021

The world's most sustainable skis

In 2021, we expanded the factory and invested in new machinery, making Åre Skidfabrik one of the world's most modern ski factories. In conjunction with this, major efforts were made to reduce energy use and improve material recycling.

All of this has meant that Åre Skidfabrik today operates the world's most sustainable ski production.

2025

Community

Over the years, we have produced several different models that have been developed together in collaboration with enthusiastic skiers, such as the Opinion series, Mothertree, Roots and most recently the brand new Icon.

As a small, independent ski brand, it is important to us to be a positive force in the ski community, and contribute what we can to create community and inclusion.
